Volunteer Program Details How to Serve

Goal of the Program

Our charism of Catholic presence in the rural south and Appalachia provides volunteers the opportunities to bring God into the lives of people who are underserved, oppressed, and unchurched.  Working side-by-side with a Glenmary Sister, volunteers will be immersed in areas where the spiritual and physical needs of people are many.  These needs are addressed daily using the gifts and talents of the individual volunteer.  It is the goal of our volunteer program to immerse women in the ministry of serving the poor and thus they will become more aware of how to serve the needs of the poor in our homeland.  They will be empowered to confidently continue serving the poor throughout their lives wherever God may lead them.

Type of Placement

Volunteers will be placed in a mission with a Glenmary Sister and help her meet the needs of the people in that mission area.  Opportunities may include outreach centers for young mothers and children, religious education programs, working with youth groups that come to serve the missions, gathering and distributing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, taking Communion to the sick and shut-ins, literacy programs, Hispanic ministries, etc.
