Testimonial

When I joined the Glenmary Sisters, I was truly blessed to serve in our Millen, Georgia, mission which covered Jenkins and Screven Counties. Sr. Mary Ellen also served this mission area for many years. She took care of clothing for the poor and ran the Catholic thrift store. Sister did some pastoral work, visiting parish members and offering assistance in various ways. I was involved in the outreach activities of the parish.

One blessing I was honored with was taking Holy Communion to the home bound. Many other ways I was able to help those in our community included providing transportation to get to doctors’ offices, Boy and Girl Scout meetings, etc. I taught Catechism, preparing children for Baptism and First Holy Communion, offered counseling assistance to members who called for it, and took the sick to the parish clinic in Sylvania. Food supplies were given to individuals as they asked for assistance. I visited some members of the Church who had stopped coming for one reason or another. I joined the Community Choir of Millen to render the life and work of St. Paul in songs during the Holy Week. It was such an interesting thing to do in the bid to come together as followers of the one true God in Jesus Christ. I prayed for continuous collaboration with our other Christian brothers and sisters of the community. I was a member of the Spiritual Team of the Cursillo movement of the Diocese.

I enjoyed working with children and volunteering in the “Make a Difference” program of the high schools and middle schools in Jenkins County. This was the way we got involved in the ecumenical activities of the Church. I assisted in the 4H program of the same schools, helping the students prepare for various project competitions. Our work in the mission kept us very busy but as time was available, I accepted invitations to prepare and give talks on various spiritual topics for the youth and some parishes for a day retreat in the Diocese of Savannah.

I feel very blessed to have served in the Millen mission and enjoyed the time I spent working alongside Sr. Mary Ellen with the families and communities of Sylvania and Millen. Our mission work was very fulfilling. With the help of our many friends, donors, the Glenmary Sisters, and blessings from our Father, we will continue to serve the needs of the people wherever we are called.

God bless you.
