Mission Immersion Experience

Come join the Glenmary Sisters for a short period of time and see how you might like saying YES to God and become a missionary.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a missionary? Have you ever felt a calling deep down inside, or maybe just a little twinge now and then, to serve the poor?

Pope Francis continually challenges the Church, including each one of us, to reach out to those in need in a more profound and obvious way. Through example, he has shown us how to be Christ-like by washing the feet of the needy and serving the poor in Rome and all around the Vatican. He leads us by example. He has recently stated that in serving the poor, you are serving Christ, and that through the poor you meet Jesus.

As you well know, it is not necessary to travel out of the country to find the poor. We can find the poor all around us in these United States, particularly in the rural South. This is what the Glenmary Sisters have done for the past seventy-five years and what they continue to do. They have found the poor in our country and work hard to serve their needs.

The Glenmary Sisters have been ministering to the poor since 1941 when Fr. William Howard Bishop founded this home mission order. The Glenmary charism is to reach out and establish a Catholic presence in areas of the rural south and Appalachia where there is no gathered Catholic Church or where the congregation is very small – usually less than 2%. While it is the Glenmary charism to bring a Catholic presence into these areas when they enter a new county, they consider all the people of that county as people for whom they have been called to serve. They feel a responsibility to help people of all faiths in order to help them meet their spiritual needs and their physical needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

The Glenmary Sisters have a strong commitment and responsibility to the poor and forgotten. We would like to invite you to partake in this most important work of the Church by joining the Sisters in their missions and working side-by-side for one week or up to a month if your schedule allows.

You will be immersed in the missions with the opportunity to perform the Corporal Works of Mercy; feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, giving shelter to the homeless, visiting the sick, etc. You will also have opportunities to perform many of the Spiritual Works of Mercy as well.

If you are a single woman between the ages of 18 and 42 and would like to immerse yourself in a mission experience please contact our Vocation Facilitator, Barbara O’Nan, 706-414-2982, or [email protected].  She will be happy to talk with you about the opportunities available.

Contact us today and begin your experience. Come meet Jesus, in a new and exciting way! You will never be the same, for, as the Prayer of St. Francis so beautifully states, “It is in giving that we receive!”
